初めてのアート作品として制作した Capture(キャプチャー)。

 

不透明なペールトーンの色ガラスとマットな質感のコントラスト。自分が職人としてこだわっている「面取り」作業。

 

今の自分に訴えかけるものを切り取り、

一つ一つ手に取るように集め、

ぎゅっと閉じ込めました。

 

ガラスの角を落として滑らかにする「面取り」は、主に触り心地をよくし、”機能性”を意識した作業ですが、研削する角度や幅によって、見た目の“美しさ”も大きく左右します。

 

これは私たちのとても大切にしている工程ですが、普段の商品づくりで「面取り」へのこだわりを語ることはあまりありません。

 

Captureでは、そんな想いを、語らずとも分かりやすく主張するよう、全ての面取り部分をあえてマットな質感に仕上げました。

 

壮大なテーマをもうけず、今、自分が大切にしている工程、興味を持っている色、質感をシンプルに体現した作品です。

 

 

『Capture 』was my first creative art piece.

 

I set out to contrast pale-toned, non transparent coloured glass with matte textures. The technique used to create this effect is called “Men-tori”; it is a process I have honed during my time as an Edo Kiriko craftsperson.

 

I decided to capture the things that speak to me, to collect them one by one, and bring them together to form a piece of art.

 

“Men-tori” is a process that was originally used to improve functionality by delicately scraping off the pointed corners of the glass in order to leave a smoother textured finish. Even the slightest error in the angle or the width of the scrape can easily tarnish the beauty of the final piece.

 

The “Men-tori” process takes an incredible amount of focus, patience and care; however, as artisans we rarely have the opportunity to speak of it in detail. With Capture, I decided to give “Men-tori” a voice of its own by texturing those sections with a matte finish.

 

Capture wasn’t created to be a spectacle, but as a genuine display of the processes, colours and textures that mean the most to me as an Edo Kiriko artisan.
